TO CIA: KRIPTOS K4 POSSIBLE SOLUTION BASED IN THE SITE OF A COMPASS ROSE (Berlin Clock) part 4

A COMPASS ROSE, BERLIN & THE CLOCK

The new clue

+ The artist who created the enigmatic Kryptos, a puzzle-in-a-sculpture that has driven code breakers to distraction since it was installed 24 years ago in a courtyard at C.I.A. headquarters in Langley, Va., has decided that it is time for a new clue.

The six letters that spell
“Berlin”—NYPVTT—
-are the 64th through 69th letters of the final 97 characters and the new clue “clock” are deciphered from the next five letters that follow it.

This means that the letters from positions 64 to 74 spell out two words: “Berlin clock.”

When asked whether his new clue was a reference to this Berlin clock, Mr. Sanborn, sounding pleased, said, “There are several really interesting clocks in Berlin.”

He added,You’d better delve into that particular clock,” a favorite of conspiracy theorists because of the mysterious death in 1991 of its designer, Dieter Binninger. With all the intriguing timekeepers in the city, including the “Clock of Flowing Time,” Mr. Sanborn said, “There’s a lot of fodder there.”

Berlin -- Have you been there?

A strange clock of Berlin and Kryptos, the  CIA sculpture have something in common in their base: A compass rose engraved

KRYPTOS +  At the same time as the main sculpture was installed, sculptor Jim Sanborn also placed several other pieces around CIA grounds, such as several large granite slabs with sandwiched copper sheets outside the entrance to the New Headquarters Building. Several morse code messages are engraved in the copper, and one of the slabs has an engraved compass rose and a lodestone. Other elements of Sanborn's installation include a landscaped area, a duck pond, a reflecting pool, and several other seemingly unmarked slabs.

BERLIN CLOCK + The World Clock "Urania" located on the famous Alexanderplatz is one of the most visited places of cosmopolitan Berlin. Located in the city center and meeting point for tourists, friends, lovers or protesters, is as popular as Alex itself.
Alexanderplatz in Berlin is a central square in the eastern part of the city, named after the Russian Tsar Alexander I. Known locally as ‘Alex’ by Berlin citizens, the square was reconstructed in 1969 by the socialistic government. It then played a central location for demonstrations and political events. The highlight of the square is the People’s fountain and the Urania World Clock structure of cement and aluminum measuring total 10 meters high. The lower column measuring 2.7 meters and has a width of 1.5 meters.

The clock is topped by a simplified model of the solar system, which revolves once a minute.

The World Time Clock is one of the Alexanderplatz's most well-known features. It was constructed in 1969 as part of the square's redevelopment and has become a popular meeting point.

It stands on a compass rose shaped stone mosaic (shown in the  picture, notice his base of the spine).

HISTORY

"This kinetic sculpture from 1969 shows, mechanically, the time in all time zones of the world. This sculpture is an early example of global thinking, produced in a country where free travel was not permitted."

+  In the early 20th Century there had been a meeting point even before the installation of the world clock on the Alexanderplatz: the "Urania's column". It was a column, equipped with some clocks of a watch factory called Urania and it also enjoyed great popularity as a meeting point in Berlin.

After the Second World War the leadership of the German Democratic Republic decide for an extensive renovation work at Alexanderplatz. Various competitions had been set for the rearrangement of the place.
The designer Erich John won the competition for the redesign of the Urania column with his idea of the world clock.

He realized the clock from plan to completion within nine months (1968-69). He coordinated the collaboration of 120 colleagues from the college of Fine Arts in Berlin and the optical factory in Rathenow, who worked in their freetime. In the clockwork a Trabi-gearbox and a ball bearing from Rothe Erde Dortmund work together - an early technical German-East-West arrangement that Erich John incited with skill and courage.

+ During the peaceful revolution and accurately to the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the GDR on 7 October 1989 gathered in the context of world time many opposition people and formed from there with cries of “We are the people” a peaceful protest march to the Palace of the Republic and continue to Gethsemane Church. During and especially after there were massive force of police and state security, with a total of 1,200 arrests. 33 days later the Berlin Wall fell.

COMMENTARY

FIRST

I have not visited Berlin and I have no better picture. Is it true that there is a compass?
It seems that you need to look where is the X , or in this case looking where is the compass rose.

Atomic Clock (Weltzeituhr) was designed by Erich John and erected in 1969 in Alexander Platz, East Berlin. It's original name was Urania World Time Clock, also called Die Urania by Berlin citizens. Spanish citizens in Berlin http://www.fotolog.com/yrual18/15667872/

It seems that the clock is on a  compass Rose

SECOND: Are they friends?
There is another possible link between "Atomic Clock" (Weltzeituhr) or "Urania world time clock" and "Kryptos": The friendship or companionship.

Erich John (6 February 1932) is a German Designers who became internationally known for the design of the Urania World Clock on Alexanderplatz in Berlin.

In 1982 he was appointed to the Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio), Department of Industrial Design, as a visiting professor.

There a possible way that Jim Sanborn can personally know and interact with him in Ohio or other place of the United States in the eighties.

But this is more difficult to confirm.

Maybe some of the readers may say something about this assumption

CURIOSITY

Place   The Urania world clock, a meeting place since the time of the Socialist Germany,  indicating time of 148 cities worldwide. The Berlin myth says that if the "zero" hours (time in Berlin) is a couple holding hands under the watch will stay together forever.

Urania  ( meaning 'heavenly' or 'of heaven') was, in Greek mythology, the muse of astronomy and a daughter of Zeus by Mnemosyne and also a great granddaughter of Uranus. Some accounts list her as the mother of the musician Linus by Apollo, and Hymenaeus also is said to have been a son of Urania.[6] She is often associated with Universal Love and the Holy Spirit. Eldest of the divine sisters, Urania inherited Zeus' majesty and power and the beauty and grace of her mother Mnemosyne.

Those who are most concerned with philosophy and the heavens are dearest to her. Those who have been instructed by her she raises aloft to heaven, for it is a fact that imagination and the power of thought lift men's souls to heavenly heights

Urania dresses in a cloak embroidered with stars and keeps her eyes and attention focused on the Heavens. She is usually represented with a celestial globe to which she points with a little staff. She is able to foretell the future by the arrangement of the stars

Alexanderplatz in Berlin

Visitors are drawn to Berlin’s Alexanderplatz for the many shopping opportunities. The square is also home to one of Berlin’s most visited sights, the Television Tower. The tower is with 368 metres the highest construction in Germany, and is further one of the tallest free-standing buildings in Europe. The Television Tower not only broadcasts TV and radio channels, it also has an observation deck offering fantastic views far beyond the famous Brandenburg Gate and the city’s borders.

Take time to explore more of Berlin and stroll from Alexanderplatz along Unter den Linden Boulevard to Brandenburg Gate. The Brandenburg Gate is a must see sight, especially at night time when it is fully illuminated.

  1. YES, IT IS A COMPASS ROSE

+ So, I have a favorite clock of Berlin: “Urania, world time clock” (Urania Weltzeituhr) for two reasons: Both are built on a compass rose engraved and both are an artistic interpretation of time and space.

    A GOOD IMAGE

  2. POSSIBLE WAY TO SOLVE K4

If the clock is the clue, logically you must find a clock to resolve problems, like this:

“The Clock Cryptograph” is basically a nicely implemented Wheatstone cipher disk.

It was in active use in the Danish armed forces from 1934 (or a little earlier) until around 1948.
